DEVELOPMENT CHARACTERISTICS
Children develop in a natural sequence, moving through similiar, predictable stages of development.
We must be careful, however, not to expect all children to move at the same pace.
Children are unique individuals and will pass through the developmental stages at their own rates.
Broad characteristics for kindergarten students include the following:
Physical Intelluctual Social/Emotional
- Is active and energetic Playing with language, trying out new words Loves to help
- Develops sense of balance Has a vocabulary of approximately 4,000 words Is eager to please
- Develops preference for left or right hand Follows directions Plays cooperatively
- Confuses fact and fantasy Accepts simple responsibilities
- Develops eye-hand coordination Thinks literally, not logically Needs help keeping track of
- belongings
- Has short attention Likes to be read to, talked to, and learn new facts Learns to follow safety rules
- Often reverse numerals and/or letters
